Congratulations to Dr Alex Hull, a post doctoral researcher in Dr Kinghorn's research group, whose latest reviewed preprint has now been published in eLife: “Redox Dyshomeostasis Links Renal and Neuronal Dysfunction in Drosophila Models of Gaucher and Parkinson’s Disease.”

His research uses fruit flies to better understand Gaucher disease and Parkinson’s disease, focusing on flies that lack two important genes: GBA1 and parkin.

Dr Hull’s team discovered that these genetic changes affect not only brain cells but also the fly’s kidney-like tissues. Their work shows that problems with the body’s ability to maintain a healthy balance of chemical reactions - known as redox balance  - can contribute to both neuronal damage and wider health issues in the organism.

The findings highlight that disorders like Parkinson’s may involve more than just the brain, and that studying the whole body can give new insights into how these diseases develop.
